Admissibility of blockchain evidence by a Chinese court

01 October 2018

Last June, the Hangzhou internet court accepted for the first time blockchain-based evidence in an alleged copyright infringement case on a website.

On 7 September 2018, the Chinese Supreme Court officially ruled that evidence authenticated with blockchain are admissible in legal disputes: “Internet courts shall recognize digital data that are submitted as evidence if relevant parties collected and stored these data via blockchain with digital signatures, reliable timestamps and hash value verification or via a digital deposition platform, and can prove the authenticity of such technology used”.

This decision could find an echo with French courts that have not yet ruled on the evidentiary value of blockchain in intellectual property matters.
