Copyright: Blockchain recognized as evidence in France

[03/04/2025]

On March 20, 2025, the Court of Marseilles took a historic step by recognizing, for the first time in France, the evidentiary value of a blockchain timestamp in a counterfeiting case.

In this dispute, AZ Factory sued Valeria Moda for marketing garments with the original characteristics of its iconic “Love from Alber” and “Hearts from Alber” creations.

Thanks to blockchain timestamps, the court was able to establish the prior right and ownership of AZ Factory’s rights:

“In the present case, the ownership of the copyright of the “Hearts from Alber” and “Love from Alber” garments in favor of the company AZ FACTORY is established by the two Blockchain timestamp statements dated May 05, 2021 and September 15, 2021.”

Therefore, Valeria Moda was found guilty of counterfeiting and ordered to pay damages to AZ FACTORY to compensate for the damages suffered.

This decision marks a turning point in the adoption of blockchain as a reliable legal tool in France.
