Eight New French PGIs Protected at the European Level
[07/07/2026]
Two recent developments illustrate the dynamism of French GIs to strengthen their protection and promotion:
📍 In the field of artisanal and industrial products: since the European regulation took effect on 1 December 2025, five new French designations have just been granted PGI status at the European level: Vannerie de Fayl-Billot, Poteries d’Alsace Soufflenheim/Betschdorf, Pierres marbrières de Rhône-Alpes, Granit de Bretagne, and Argiles du Velay—following Porcelaine de Limoges in May. The INPI is now processing the national phase of these applications by verifying compliance with the specifications, the applicant’s representativeness, and the proven link between the product and its territory of origin before forwarding them to the EUIPO, which decides on final registration across all 27 member states.
🦢 In the agri-food sector: Three iconic products from the Southwest—“Oie du Sud-Ouest,” “Confit d’oie du Sud-Ouest,” and “Foie gras d’oie du Sud-Ouest”—have been granted PGI status following the publication of the implementing regulation in the Official Journal of the European Union on June 11, 2026. Every stage of the process—from raising the geese to processing and packaging—is carried out within the defined geographical area, which covers a large part of the Southwest and ensures a close link between the products and their origin.
These designations highlight the richness of France’s industrial sectors—both artisanal and agri-food—and the growing strategic importance of Geographical Indication protection in guaranteeing consumers the authenticity, origin, and quality of these products and protecting them from counterfeiting throughout Europe.
