The EU launches the registration procedure for geographical indications for craft and industrial products
[04/12/2025]
As of 1 December 2025, European artisans and producers can register their product names under the new EU geographical indications (GI) system for craft and industrial products. This marks the first time that GI protection — long established for food, wine and spirits — is extended to non-agricultural products.
Geographical indications are intellectual property rights that link a product’s qualities, reputation or characteristics to its place of origin.
Regulation (EU) 2023/2411 establishes EU-wide protection for geographical indications for craft and industrial products. It builds on the agricultural GI system, which has protected more than 3,600 GIs for over 30 years.
Adopted on 18 October 2023, the Regulation creates a single European title for geographical indications for craft and industrial products. Registered products will benefit from the GI logo (Protected Geographical Indication – PGI), enabling producers to put an end to the misuse or counterfeiting of their names.
Producers may submit applications either through a recognised producer group or individually. Each application must include a product specification detailing the name, production process and geographical area, and must be filed with the competent national authority in the relevant EU Member State.
The EUIPO’s Geographical Indications Portal for craft and industrial products provides all the necessary information and tools.
Our teams are, of course, at your disposal to assist you with these procedures.
