Recognition of the PGI “Caviar d’Aquitaine”

On 18 February 2025, after twelve years of application, “Caviar d’Aquitaine” received European recognition as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI).

It hence becomes the first caviar to be protected by a PGI in the European Union.

All the stages – from the production of sturgeon fry to the processing and packaging of Aquitaine caviar – must take place within the geographical area of the PGI, namely: in the areas of Gironde, Landes and Lot-et-Garonne and in some municipalities of Charente, Charente-Maritime, Dordogne, Gers and Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

This sign of quality, which was previously protected by a collective trademark handled by Germain Maureau, strengthens the protection of the name “Caviar d’Aquitaine” against direct and indirect damages caused by evocation, and guarantees consumers an authentic product that meets strict specifications.
