The recognition of the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) “Lorraine” for sparkling wines

[23/10/2024]

On 7 October 2024, the European Commission officially recognized the PGI “Lorraine” for its high-quality white, rosé and red sparkling wines produced in the areas of Meurthe-et-Moselle, Meuse and Moselle, after three years of regulatory and legal battles.

This new PGI, which allows to enhance and protect Lorraine's historical winemaking know-how, complements the other official high-quality signs applicable to certain still wines in the region, namely the Protected Designations of Origin (PDOs) "Cotes de Toul" and "Moselle" and the PGI "Cotes de Meuse".

The specifications include traditional local grape varieties - such as auxerrois, chardonnay, white, gray and black pinots, riesling, gamay - as well as new varieties adapted to climatic changes such as cabernet cortis, gamaret, johanniter and souvignier gris.
