News: Evolution of the Regulation on New Genomic Techniques (NGTs)

[01/02/2024]

On January 24, 2024, the European Parliament’s Environment Committee (ENVI) voted in favour of new rules for new genomic techniques (NGTs) used to genetically modify some features of plants.

The members of Parliament approved the creation of two categories of plants obtained through NGTs, each one with its own rules, namely:

  • NGT 1 which will be treated as plants derived from traditional breeding techniques and exempt from the requirements of GMO legislation; and
  • NGT 2 which will fall under the current GMO legislation, with mandatory product labelling.

The Commission has however decided not to authorise the protection of NGT-based products by patent.
