Brexit: impact on .EU domain names
[27/02/2019]
On 28 March 2018, the European Commission announced that as of the date of the UK’s withdrawal, the holders of .EU domain names who do not reside in the United Kingdom will no longer be eligible to register .eu domain names or to renew .eu domain names.
With the exit date approaching, EURID (the registry in charge of .EU domains) has recently published its action plan on https://eurid.eu/fr/register-a-eu-domain/brexit-notice/, according to possible scenarios depending on whether the United Kingdom and the European Union reach a deal.
These two scenarios both lead to the non-eligibility for any British owners of .eu domains but their application dates will be different.
Regardless of the scenario, .EU domain names registered in the name of a British natural or legal person will sooner or later be subject to a change of ownership.
